Puerto Rican sensation, and 2008 Olympic representative, Jonathan Gonzalez, gets a primetime spot on the season opener of Friday Night Fights this weekend, as he takes on unranked Philadelphia native Derek “Pooh” Ennis in a televised co-featured 10-rounder from Miami, Florida. Gonzalez, now 23-years old, is coming off of a 12 round draw with 42nd rated Serhiy Dzinziruk this past September, and he is anxious to restore his “prospect cred” with an impressive win in a major televised bout. He is a tall fighter with a good jab, an accurate right hand, and an effective body attack, but he stands straight up and is easily hit with counter shots. In this fight, Gonzalez faces a tough Philly kid who has been involved in his share of battles, including a majority decision nod over 10th rated Gabriel Rosado in July of 2010 to win the USBA junior middleweight title. Ennis is about as “action” as they come, and if he manages to set up shop on the inside, his pressure and high volume attack could be dangerous for Gonzalez and his frequently exposed chin. Ultimately, however, I think Gonzalez is the better all-around boxer in this matchup, and if he can establish the jab to give himself some distance, he should be able to come away with a win; but it won’t be easy. Ennis will make a fight of it, and he will tag Gonzalez with some good shots, but assuming Gonzalez is game enough (and smart enough), I think he is talented enough to box his way to a close decision win.
